From the history:
The house was built in 1597 even though a pub used to be there as early as the Middle Ages; it is said that the pub was visited by Charles the Fourth himself when he was supervising the construction of the stone bridge. The original building stood on a pillar of the former Judith Bridge which had been destroyed by flood. The house was built by Jan Fux; he sold ostrich plumes which were all the vogue at that time. In 1606, he invited Daniel Alexius from Květná to paint a bombastic advertisement with symbols of all services he offered to promote his business; the painting was all over the facade. Jan Fux was a feather merchant alias 'federschmucker', he decorated women's hats or horse trappings with precious bird feathers, made fans and other decorations which he, being a fashion designer, designed himself. In 1648, the house was damaged by the Swedes when they were besieging Prague. Cyril Geer, a Prague architect, built up a Baroque top floor during the subsequent reconstruction in 1657. The timber ceiling decorated with grapevine motives, found on the ground floor, comes from that period as well; it was discovered in the 1970s. In 1714, Deodat Ramajan, an Armenian, opened the first coffee house in Bohemia; he sold coffee imported by Deodastus Damascenus, a Greek. In 1972 – 1976 the coloured facade was repaired, the house was reconstructed and shaped into a hotel.
The house had a lot of owners, the purpose was always the same, though – to be a hospitable place for those who visited it.
The last private owner before nationalization was Josef Dundr, who bought the house in 1922, improved the reastaurant that had been built up and repaired the house properly. State ownership did not do good to the building, though, it was in such a condition that there was threat of collapse. In the 1970s, action was taken to repair the house completely in the eleventh hour; two smaller neighbouring houses were joined, storing space in the cellars was extended and the house was rebuilt into a luxury hotel and restaurant. Original 17th-century timber ceilings with Renaissance ornaments were hung on steel constructions in some rooms and the interior was equipped with pseudo-Renaissance furniture.
There are several legends about the house sign. The first one says that the profligate wife of the first owner of the house, Jan Fux, begged for presents constantly and wished for a living ostrich. The husband met her wish and he met her wish even when she wanted another ostrich. But when she asked for a third one, he got angry and said that he would preferably have liked to make the third ostrich from her. The day after no one could find the chatelaine and a third bird had been added onto the house – a female ostrich.
The second one maintains that during the rule of Charles the Fourth foreign delegation spent night in the house; they had brought three ostriches to the Caesar as a gift and for that reason the house got this sign to be its mark.

We were disappointed with the size and location of room. We paid extra for a superior room with view. It did have a view but nothing else about it was superior. It was very small with very limited storage space on 3rd floor (and I have spinal problems & chronic pain!) The alternative offered on 1st floor was no view and we chose hotel for this AND for the promised (but non-existent) tea/coffee making facilities. I did negotiate for a kettle to be provided, which it was in time for my morning tea. That young man was very helpful - not so a woman who we asked for a toilet roll at end of the break, as no spares were left in the room that day. That never came. The room photos are completely misleading - one could almost say fraudulant! Our room was a fraction of the size of the double room shown - and we were paying extra!! |

Apart from one girl on the desk at reception when we checked in,( she spoke excellent English and had worked in England in Plymouth ) the staff were totally miserable, unfriendly, unhelpful and made you feel as if you were worthless.I have never in all my years of travelling come across such a miserable group of people in the hotel business. Also in the brochure for the hotel it stated that there were tea making facilities in your room but on asking at the desk were told that no they did not do that service!! |

This charming hotel at the west end of the Charles Bridge offers a perfect jumping-off point for exploring all parts of this lovely city. It's hard to imagine a much better location; it's just a short walk from all major tourist destinations and surrounded by tons of restaurants and shops, yet the areas is not as crowded as the Old Town district across the bridge. Our room was exceptionately quiet at night, although it's clear that might be different during summer, if you needed to keep open the windows, as crowds of people pass by all day. The room was fine—not overly spacious and furniture a bit worn, but we weren't visiting to sleep and spend all day in a room, so it didn't matter much. The staff was, for the most part, friendly and attentive, and spoke adequate English. The free breakfast was adequate, but not great, with a full assortment of choices (coffee not so good!). On the down side, the toilet did not flush well; we asked someone to look at it and fix it, but the problem persisted during our six-day stay. Also, our U.S. electrical adapters worked in just the bathroom outlet, not the others. The Internet signal was intermittent and often weak. Still, overall, this hotel is a fine value for the money. We were very satisfied and highly recommend it. |
