Roxy offers perhaps the best compromise between a modern dance club and an alternative music scene. Not a very big club, in Dlouhá street, about 300 m from the Náměstí Republiky metro station, with an experimental theatre called NoD at the second floor, doesn’t fully rely on DJs, although it holds two of the biggest names in house and techno, DJ Loutka and DJ Trava. Roxy is focusing on live performances by Czech alternative bands and its Free Mondays, when there’s no admission, traditionally showcase new talents.
Although the club is relatively small, many big names in today’s music industry like Kosheen, Placebo, Transglobal Underground or Franz Ferdinand chose to hold their concerts here. It is mostly because of the club’s great atmosphere, good acoustics and low prices.
Roxy’s NoD Theatre is combined with a gallery, internet café and cinema. It hosts various exhibitions by not so well know artists and offers projections of world cinematography, most notably Japanese. Its theatre productions are using scenic dance and music, are usually non-verbal and mostly perceived as the new Prague avant-garde.
