Theatre on the Balustrade

Established in 1958, the Theatre on the Balustrade has deserved its reputation of perhaps the most intriguing scene in whole Prague. Among its founders were legendary actors Ivan Vyskočil and Jiří Suchý, situating the theatre at an Old Town house. Incredible actors, playwrights and political personalities have somehow managed to participate in the theatre’s success. It was the place where young playwright Václav Havel and director Jan Grossman came up with the famous Czech Theatre of Absurd and right before the Velvet Revolution, the theatre sheltered future great artists like Oscar-winning Jiří Menzel.
The Theatre on the Balustrade chooses modern dramas and practically awoke in 1993 after Petr Lébl, a young actor, was appointed artistic director. His experimental approach to classical pieces defined the theatre’s future direction. Today, the repertoire contains Russian authors, most notably Tchechov, and modern dramas, written by contemporary Czech literates. The theatre kept the spirits up during communism and opposed the regime-controlled art and its personalities have become by far the most popular and loved Czech artists.
