Prague State Opera

The Prague State Opera was established in 1992 on the bases of a former German Theatre. The beautiful neo-classical building existed as the New German Theatre until the Nazi Occupation when it was closed. During communism, it was declared part of the Prague’s National Theatre and after the Velvet Revolution started representing the capital’s opera scene.
Many interesting and world famous artists worked and performed at the opera, most notably composers Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, who conducted the symphonic orchestra. Even Enrico Caruso became the Prague Opera’s solist for one season. The Opera’s building is very near the National Museum and is relatively small. Nevertheless, it is visited by many Prague citizens and competes with the National Theatre which is also producing operas. The repertoire is very diverse ranging from Verdi to Czech composers like Smetana and Dvořák. The solists are carefully selected and the musical level is widely acknowledged by Czech and foreign experts.
