Prague National Theatre

Without a doubt, the most interesting and lucrative theatre scene in Prague represents the Czech national pride and determination. During severe absolutism in the Austrian Empire and the national movements trying to erase its effect on Czech culture, Prague needed a theatre where plays could be performed in Czech language. Money being donated for the building by Prague citizens, both rich and the poor, the architect Josef Zítek constructed a beautiful building using classical architecture with a touch of modern art. In the middle of the works, a mysterious fire almost destroyed the theatre and people were so determined to have their theatre that the money needed to repair the damage was collected in mere 47 days.
The grand opening of the National Theatre in 1883 was a big event for Prague and famous opera “Libuše” by Antonín Dvořák warmed the stage. Ever since, it has been offering the capital city a classical stage, producing plays, ballets and operas. Its repertoire has always been very Czech-centered and the National Theatre is trying to promote Czech playwrights and composers putting them on the same level as their famous foreign colleagues. The theatre’s beautiful interior, decorated by finest Czech artists, great ensemble and soloists and high artistic standards have made it one of the famous European scenes.
