Laterna Magika Theatre

An experimental theatre stage in Prague has definitely set out to become part of the city’s cultural heritage. It’s been counting its history since year 1958 when director Alfred Radok and stage designer Josef Svoboda performed a short play called “Laterna Magika” at the Brussels EXPO 58. Their innovative approach reached the audience in Belgium and so they decided to reconstruct the play and perform it in Czechoslovakia.
In the 70s, Laterna Magika became officially part of the Prague’s a href=http://www.prague.st/city-info/static/eng/prague-culture/prague-theatres/prague-national-theatre-mal.php>National Theatre, settling right next it in an architectonically absurd and very modern building. Laterna Magika’s artistic director, Josef Svoboda, who was also one of the theatre’s founders, innovated its basic elements and used the technical progress to his benefit. The performances are, very much like the majority of Prague theatre scene, very modern, using big screen projections, non-verbal communication, scenic dancers, lights, pantomime, shadows, music and all possible factors that help transfer the artistic ideas to the audiences. Prague has embraced Laterna Magika as its second a href=http://www.prague.st/city-info/static/eng/prague-culture/prague-theatres/prague-national-theatre-mal.php>National Theatre, proving that it certainly is the city of modern art.
