Karlín Music Theatre
Karlín Music Theatre was built in 1881 in a neo-baroque style. It is one of the biggest theatre buildings in Prague and can host over a thousand viewers. It set the Czech tradition of musicals, variety shows and cabarets. Many important artists like comedian Jan Werich or actor Oldřich Nový were Karlín’s artistic directors and turned it into a Prague sensation with their own musicals and cabaret shows. Although part of the Eastern Bloc, this grand theatre had shows like My Fair Lady and Hello Dolly in the 60s and it started the tradition of performing Broadway musicals with lyrics translated into Czech. Today, the Karlín Theatre is situated in the Prague Congress Centre, because the 2002 floods damaged the theatre’s original building. Many stars of the Czech show business are members of the ensemble and working on a Karlín produced musical has become a professional privilege. USEFUL LINKS |
