Image Theatre
The Image theatre, a descendant of Prague’s Animato Black Light Theatre, continues in its tradition trying to bring new aspects to the genre. Established in 1989, the theatre struggled to be accepted among the Prague scene and their first project, “Jazztime Stories” was a combination of black theatre technique and a one-man mime show, accompanied by jazz music written especially for the play. The small ensemble soon moved to legendary club Lávka on the bank of Vltava River. Its work with dance, music and visual art was original and gained a wide audience. After touring Italy, the theatre company chose to settle in one of the most prominent and expensive Prague streets, Pařížská (in translation Paris Street) offering an alternative approach to the black light theatre scene. One of their best known projects, “Professor’s Pražák’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Miracles”, first shown in 1997, is still popular not only by Prague residents but also the tourists, who are drawn into the play without language barriers, because the Image’s performances are all non verbal.
