Museum of Prague

Established in 1881, the museum contains the most extensive display of Prague’s art and history. Its archaeology collection is one of the world’s greatest, because the Museum’s first governor was an amateur archaeologist himself. The museum’s council also organizes many archaeological researches in the capital area, tracing down the artifacts from prehistoric and medieval ages.
Other significant collections contain graphics, paintings and statues by Czech and foreign artists, mostly from the Rudolfinian era. The modern history is well documented in photography and many exhibitions of modern art are being held here. The Prague Museum is trying to preserve the city’s unforgettable atmosphere and is a must-see for all history, art and architecture lovers.
The museum hosts many temporary exhibitions that are trying to depict aspects of daily life in Prague throughout the history. The most famous permanent exhibit is the amazing Langweil’s Maquette of 19th century Prague. Visitors can also take a “tour” through Prague’s history from Paleolithic times till the 18th century.
