Jewish Museum

The Jewish Museum represents one of the largest collections of jewish art and culture in the world. It has over 40 000 exhibits, containing thousands of jewish books and writings. Its exhibitions are in six locations, most notably the Maisel synagogue offering an overview of Jewish history in Bohemia and Moravia. The exhibition in Pinkas Synagogue is dedicated to the victims of Holocaust, with their names inscribed on the walls. The Old Jewish Cemetery contains almost 12 000 tombstones, the oldest ones being from the 15th century and its mystical atmosphere has been attracting Prague tourists for decades. The other two museum areas are in Klausen Synagogue and the Ceremonial Hall, their exhibitions focusing on daily lives, traditions and rituals of the Prague Jews.
The institution was founded in 1906 by the members of the Czech Jewish movement. It had to preserve valuable artifacts from old synagogues that were being destroyed during the renovation of Jewish Town. After the Nazi invasion, the museum was shut down to be reopened by the Nazis themselves who used it to store the items stolen or left from the Jewish citizens. During communism, all activities concerning ethnical or religious topics were taboo and so the Jewish Museum was fully restored in 1989, after the Velvet Revolution. In 1994, the previously collectivized buildings and collections were returned to the Prague Jewish Community which organizes projects and exhibitions aiming to educate Prague citizens about the Second World War and the effect it had on the Jewish.
