National Gallery

The Prague National Gallery started forming in 1796 when a group of Czech patriot nobles decided to put a taste in art on a whole new level. They soon started a small exhibition hall that was followed by the Modern Gallery of the Czech Kingdom, financed by emperor Franz Joseph I The bases for today’s National Gallery were built.
The gallery itself has six main locations, the most famous is the http://www.prague.st/city-info/static/eng/prague-architecture/prague-castle-and-hradcany/sternberg-palace-mal.php displaying art all the way from the Antique times till the Baroque period. With pieces from Goya, Tintoretto El Greco or Rembrandt, the exhibition pays tribute to great European artists. Perhaps the most important painting in the gallery is Albrecht Dürer’s “Festival of the Rosary” coming from the private collection of Rudolph II. Another part of it is in the Saint George Convent (klášter svatého Jiří), which houses one of the biggest collections of Maneurist art, showing works by Bartolomeus Spranger or Hans von Aachen, Rudolph’s court painters.
House at the Black Madonna displays works of Czech cubism in the 20s completed by the exhibition in Veletržní Palace showing modern art of famous artists like Gauguin, but also not so well-known Czech painters and sculptors. An interesting collection of Oriental art, above all Japanese and Chinese, can be found at the Kinski Palace.
A prided art gallery in Prague is visited by numerous tourists and world-known for its selection of finest works combined with interesting architecture of the gallery buildings, each one of them being a work of art in its own right.
