Old Town Square

The centre of Prague’s Old Town and the pulsing heart of the city’s tourism, the Old Town Square and expensive shopping streets that surround it, are ignored by residents who only cross it when they need to get to the nearby Mustek metro station. But a few hundred years ago, it was still Prague’s main market place. The Old Town Square witnessed many sad and happy moments of Czech history, including the Execution of the protestant nobles after the White Mountain battle in 1620. Nowadays, the chaotic atmosphere of the square full of tourist guides, clicking cameras and loud cafés has distracted the attention from architecture pieces less famous than the Astronomical Clock. Some of the most interesting examples include the Kinski Palace, House of the Stone Bell and many beautiful Romanesque or Gothic houses. At the centre of the Square stands the large Jan Hus monument, built in 1916, symbolizing the life and struggles of this outspoken preacher.
