Waldstein Palace

The lavish palace was built by Albrecht von Waldstein, the generalissimo of the Habsburg armies during the Thirty years war. Waldstein, a financial speculator and even a counterfeiter, had the king owing to him. His palace, today housing the Senate of the Czech Republic, was supposed to overshadow the grand Prague Castle. The Waldstein palace is so large that 23 houses and three gardens had to be demolished to make way for it.
