The Černín Palace

This palace was built in 1668 for the Imperial Ambassador of Venice, but during the Theresian period (reign of Mary Theresa of Austria), it was badly damaged when the Prussians bombarded Prague. Almost a 100 years later it was sold to the state, and since 1918 when the first Czechoslovakian Republic was established, it has been home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. One of the affairs surrounding the palace was the alleged suicide of Jan Masaryk, foreign minister and son of Czechoslovakia’s first president, Thomas Masaryk. In the year 1948, the minister fell out of the bathroom window, but it isn’t clear, whether it was intentional. Some accuse communist secret police of murdering him, for he was a democrat and an anti-communist.
