Its foundation stone was laid in 1344 by Emperor Charles IV, the most significant ruler in the Czech history and Prague’s father, leaving it with beautiful Gothic architecture that attracting the tourists till today. Formerly a Prague rotunda, founded by Saint Wenceslas, it was rebuilt into late Gothic style by two Italian taught architects. Over the following centuries, some renaissance and baroque elements were added and it is said that the Cathedral hasn’t yet been completed. Of numerous chapels in this Prague Cathedral, the most amazing one is Parler’s Chapel of Saint Wenceslas, dedicated to the Czech King and saint, one of the inspirations of Charles IV. The cathedral is completed with many great examples of 20th century Czech stained glass art and marvelous paintings and reliefs, including works by Caspar Bechterle or Czech Art Nouveau artist, František Bílek. The cathedral’s Royal Crypt contains the remains of Charles IV, his son Wenceslas IV, the Hussite king George of Poděbrady and Habsburg Emperor, Rudolph II. The building’s Great Tower offers an excellent view on Prague and details of the Prague Castle. USEFUL LINKS |
