Convent of St George
Important for being the first convent in Prague and whole Bohemia, it was established in 973 by Boleslav, brother of the famous Saint Wenceslas. It served its purpose until it was turned into barracks in 1782, during the reform period of Joseph II, who preferred practical aspects to religion. Paradoxically, in the Communist 60s and the 70s, it was completely reconstructed and today houses a collection of Czech Renaissance and Baroque art as a part of the Prague National Gallery. The convent’s collection includes the famous Maneurist paintings by Hans von Aachen and Bartolomeus Spranger, court artists of Princess Libuše. USEFUL LINKS |
