Prague Castle and Hradčany

The most popular sight visited in Prague, the Prague Castle is the symbol of the city’s beautiful panorama, reminding tourists of the Budapest cathedral, but otherwise unique in its essence. It is the largest ancient castle in the world, 570 m long, 128 wide and covering the area of 7,28 hectares. Constructed as a wooden fortress by first Czech ruler Bořivoj in the 9th century, it took many years, eras and architecture styles to turn it into the magnificent monument of Czech history.
Witnessing Prague’s rise to fame, its historical high and low points, it had made the city the tourist miracle that we know today. Ever since Bořivoj decided to make it centre of the city that Princess Libuše saw in her dreams, many rulers tried to rebuild it and add to its beauty leaving the Prague Castle a mixture of styles. It has gone through four major reconstructions, most importantly the classical facelift it was given in the 18th century during the reign of Mary Theresa. It has three huge courtyards and many sections, nowadays housing museums, galleries and tourist shops.
