The fall of Habsburgs

Relations between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Prussia resulted in the First World War. A large amount of Czech soldiers deserted from the Austrian army and usually joined the Russians or the Serbians. Many Czechs had found themselves in the middle of the October revolution and were forced to fight. Some of them, like the legendary character of Švejk, saw the war with a necessary amount of sarcasm, some decided to fight against it.
The rebelling organizations were mostly assembling information from all fronts and preparing themselves for the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The largest group was Maffia led by Edward Beneš, one of the most controversial Czech politicians. In the meantime, Thomas Masaryk was traveling both Europe and the United States trying to persuade local political authorities about the democratic direction of the future Czech state. This was confirmed in the Washington Declaration, the most important document in modern Czech history, in October, 1918.
