Princess Libuše

Along with St Wenceslas, Libuše is a significant figure standing at the bases of Czech history. She is a mythical character whose existence has never been historically proven. Yet Kosmas, a Czech chronicler who lived in the 11th century, made people familiar with her life, personality and most of all, her prophecies.
After the death of Father Czech, legendary consolidator of Slavic tribes, a respected man called Krok was voted magnate by the people. In 5th century he built Vyšehrad, a grand palace for Czech rulers. Its exact location remains a mystery, but today’s Vyšehrad in Prague is supposedly standing on the ruins of the old palace. Krok had three daughters, each with a special gift. Kazi had healing power, Teta could speak to the ghosts and Libuše, the youngest, could tell the future. After her father died, she ruled the Czechs from Vyšehrad.
Libuše was righteous and wise, still the other magnates couldn’t bear the thought of being under the command of a woman. The princess didn’t want to cause conflicts and so she promised to marry a husband chosen for her by the magnates. She married Premysl, an ordinary plowman, who gave name to the Czech Premysl dynasty. He was very modest and always referred to his simple past.
Libuše saw Prague in her dreams. “I see a great castle whose glory shall touch the Heavens,” she said to her horsemen. A legation was sent to find this place, at the junction of rivers Vltava and Brusnice. This is where the first stones of the Czech capital city were laid. Her character has been a symbol of Czech national pride throughout history, she was a great inspiration to poets, writers, painters and composers. Opera “Libuše” by Bedřich Smetana was the opening act for National Theatre in 1883 – the first Czech theatre.
