Czechoslovakia

The neighboring Slovaks decided to form a state with the Czechs. They no longer wanted to be part of the Hungarian empire. Hungarian politics were viewed upon as aggressive by the outer world and could harm Slovaks’ reputation in the future. In October 1918, Czechoslovakia was established. Its first president, Masaryk, was a true idealist who wanted democracy with its advantages and with its flaws. The period between 1918, the first year of Czechoslovakia’s existence, and 1938, which meant the dawning of World War II, meant peace and political freedom. Masaryk’s state was a symbol of democracy among ex-monarchy states. Unfortunately, the liberal system led to extreme multi-pluralism that brought chaos and unstableness.
Masaryk’s Prague was full of intellectuals who were personal friends to him, especially the most celebrated of all Czech writers, Karel Čapek. Masaryk’s “Castle Politics” (from the Prague Castle, which became seat of government) formed Czech diplomacy and great relations with the Western world, especially England and France. But this wasn’t enough to keep the Allies, from signing Hitler’s Munich Pact, which destroyed the young democracy.
