Charles IV and the 14th century Prague

Charles IV is by far the most praised of all Czech kings. His intelligence, education, political abilities and persistence also made him the most powerful man of 14th century Europe. Thanks to this, the so-called Carlovingian Prague was the true melting pot of all cultures, most notably Jewish, and centre of the late-medieval Europe. In 1348, Charles IV established world-famous Charles University in Prague, and also started re-building the St Vitus rotunda into a monumental cathedral.
He was a ruler who surpassed his time, with his interest in architecture, deep faith and love for his Czech roots. He married four times for political reasons. The Carlovingian era covers the reign of Charles and his son, Wenceslas IV. It is famous for its cultural progress, two great rulers and peace. It also gave Prague the amazing gothic panorama, that has been attracting foreign visitors for centuries and made it the true Caput Regni – head of Kingdom.
